Some damage is deep enough, or long enough, that it looks like there's no way around a body shop. Sometimes that's true. But not always. A deep crease and a stretched panel aren't automatically the same thing, and the only real way to know which one you have is to look at it in person with a dent light, not guess from a photo or from how bad it feels to look at.
It doesn't always work out. But a photo costs you nothing, and it's worth knowing before you tear the car apart and repaint it.
A deep dent and a stretched dent aren't automatically the same problem. Metal can be pushed in fairly deep and still have somewhere to go when it's worked back out. Stretched metal is different: the surface area of the panel has actually expanded from the impact, and there's more material sitting in that spot than there was before. That's the kind of damage that fights back against paintless dent repair, because you can't put displaced metal back to a size it no longer is.
The tricky part is that you usually can't tell which one you're looking at just by staring at it. A dent light and a hand on the metal read that difference in a way eyes alone don't.
Almost everyone describes their own dent as less serious than it turns out to be in person. That's not a criticism, it's just what happens when you look at your own car every day and get used to the damage being there. A crease that would stop most people in their tracks gets talked about as "not that bad" by the person who's been driving past it for three weeks.
That's exactly why a photo, or a phone description, isn't where the real answer comes from. I'll look at it myself, measure it out, and tell you honestly what I'm looking at, whether that's better or worse than what you expected.
Factory paint stays intact, there's no color-match risk from a repaint, and the repair is typically finished the same day it starts. No panel replacement, no weeks at a body shop.
You haven't lost anything by asking. You still have every option you had before, including the body shop, and now you know for certain instead of wondering.
This is one of the few calls in this business where trying first has no real downside. The only outcome that costs you something is not asking at all.
I'm not going to tell you every deep crease comes out clean, because that's not true, and it wouldn't be fair to you to pretend otherwise. What I will do is give you a straight, in-person answer before anything gets touched: this is a good candidate, this is a maybe, or this one really does need a body shop.
